Two Approaches in Writing an Article

01:32

Making an article is not really difficult. But of course, you need to have the basic knowledge first then have plenty of exercises. there are two approaches that I can propose. first is the outline approach, and secondly is the mind mapping approach. The outline approach will take you to a more structured and sequential writing. It is quite suitable for you who like to think in a linear way. Thus, you can take the outline approach when writing certain kind of writing such as a how-to article, scientific article, and such. For a more creative result, I would suggest taking the mind mapping approach1

Just remember, whichever approach that you take, it should make you more comfortable in writing. These approaches are just suggestions for you. It is not meant to be a rule.2

(Do you notice how I put some footnotes in this article? They look pretty neat don't they? I took an advice from other blogger.3 )

Anyway, here is the outline approach.

Outline Approach

In this approach, you should determine a topic, then break it down using some outlines. That is some bullets under the main idea. For example as follows:

Studying

  • Purpose of studying
    • to gain more knowledge
    • to master some skill
  • Means to study
    • school
    • friends
    • ask the master
  • Types of study
    • formal
    • informal

As you can see above, the outline approach gives us a more structured thinking. From the subject of studying, we can break it down to the purpose, means, then types of study.

1 It's just my opinion, though.
